Yagya / Havan

What is Havan/Yagya?

Havanam / Havan or Yagya is the term for a sacred purifying ritual (yajna) in Hinduism that involves a fire ceremony. It is a ritual of sacrifice made to the fire god Agni.

It is performed to please the gods or to attain certain wishes. An essential element is the sacrificial fire - the divine Agni - into which oblations are poured, as everything that is offered into the fire is believed to reach the gods. It is believed that this sacrifice will bring health, happiness, luck and prosperity.

Havan/Yagya also brings high energies into our minds and body thereby paving way for the positive thoughts, actions etc. to enter into our life. They help in re-vitalizing the three energies in our body (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and help in maintaining the energy balance.

Havan also helps in propitiation of deities responsible for the attainment of various virtues and prosperity and help in fulfillment of materialistic and physical needs.

A Havan is performed for -

   1. Cleansing of the atmosphere
   2. Cleansing of the physical and psychic bodies
   3. Awakening of auspicious energies
   4. Enabling mystical experiences
   5. Invoking grace of God in our Lives

After lighting a Havan Kund (sacrificial fire), objects such as fruits, honey, or wooden goods are put into the sacred fire.

How to Perform a Havan /Yagya ?

Place - A clean place is selected for the Havan. Participants should shower, wear clean clothes and sit in easy postures. After prayers, fire is lit and Vedic Mantras are chanted and offerings are made to God.

Time - It is most beneficial and most preferred to perform Havan in Morning time(sunrise time) or Evening time(sunset time). You can perform it at any other time also. Its important to keep in mind that the Mantras for morning and evening are different.

A Learned Priest -A Vedic  yajña is typically performed by priest by reciting or singing Vedic verses.Usually, there will be one fire in the centre of the offering ground and items are offered into the fire. Among the items offered as oblations in the yajña include large quantities of ghee, milk, grains, cakes, or soma.

Duration of Havan/Yagya -The duration of a yajña depends on the type; some can last a few minutes, hours or days and some even last for years, with priests continuously offering to the gods accompanied with sacred verses.

Background : The Gayatri Mantra is first recorded in the Rig Veda (iii, 62, 10) which was written in Sanskrit about 2500 to 3500 years ago, and by some reports, the mantra may have been chanted for many generations before that. Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism, second only to the mantra Om. Since all the other three Vedas contain much material rearranged from the Rig Veda, the Gayatri mantra is found in all the four Vedas. The deva invoked in this mantra is Savitr, and hence the mantra is also called Savitri.

Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra:
The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing / respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect dhiyo

Introduction to Mantras

Man is entirely a different form of creature than animals. It has got excellent intelligence and memory but has no supernatural power. God has been kind enough to impart him some of his super natural powers. While doing so, technique of receiving has been made so complicated and intrinsic that ordinary fellow cannot adopt these techniques. This requires spiritual search and practice on constant and continuous basis.

Desire has no limit , we take shortcuts to their accomplishment. Meditation, mantras and yajna can help in achieving the same . If you look at the real purpose of meditation, there is no room for worldly desire. But basic purpose and performance of meditation is the desire for MOKSHA. But modern man meditated only to attain wealth and worldly comforts. There should be no doubt that real path of meditation takes us to wealth and comfort initially and MOKSHA(salvation) being the final stage. But we stop in our spiritual practice after some of our desire of  immediate nature are fulfilled.

It is true in modern world that empty stomach may not permit the mind to salvation stage. Wealth, health and wisdom is also needed for the mind to be ready for meditation. Man who initially have not much to eat is given sumptuous food, fills his belly with maximum quantity of food at initial stages from where he had started initially. This may be secret of God that this subjects seeking MOKSHA should be given taste of wealth and comforts initially, even when a person does not want at any later stage. When man meditates with sincerity and observes correct techniques as imparted by our ancients his surroundings become favorable ,wealth, health, wisdom or whatever sadhak desired flows in, than the real stage of salvation begins.

While meditation is the art of concentration of mind, MANTRA is the art of sound vibrations.

Recitation of Mantra affects every aspect of our life. It assists in circumventing difficulties in man's path and emerges a winner in all aspects of life, career, family, education and finally puts man on the path of MOKSHA.

MANTRA is a science/art , a definite way be stimulating the right energies as when we utter these sounds(words), our entire body vibrates and benefits from the universe are attracted towards the Sadhka. Yagna or Havan is a scientific procedure created by ancient Rishis. These are two types of benefits Yajnas, Sakan(which helps in fulfillment of worldly desires) and Nishkam(which helps the man on the path of MOKSHA). Lord Krishna explains in Geeta,"Swarga Kam Yajet" if you desire ultimate bliss /MOKSHA than perform Yajna.
